Big Idea: “Design a Stay Woke Poster that Represented the Pressing Times”

This poster was a response to the mistreatment of African Americans in the United States and the idea of “staying woke” and what that term means in America. A client from the “Eastern Echo,” a student-run newspaper at Eastern Michigan University, reached out and asked for this graphic to go in-conjunction with a political piece he was writing for the paper.

“Stay woke” is a phrase that originated in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and has evolved to mean staying informed, aware, and attentive, particularly regarding social and political issues. It urges people to be conscious of societal injustices, to question the status quo, and to remain vigilant and aware of what’s happening around them. The term gained popularity as a call to action, encouraging individuals to stay informed and engaged in discussions about important issues affecting marginalized communities.
